Tory Lanez has dropped a new single called “Hurt Me,” which he recorded behind bars while he awaits sentencing for shooting Megan Thee Stallion.
The Canadian crooner promised the new single with his One Umbrella signee Yoko Gold was the first of many more new tracks to come, saying on Instagram his jail cell has become his personal office.
“To My Family, my friends, and to the Umbrellas World Wide I want ya’ll to know I haven’t lost my faith in God and that I’m in high spirits,” he wrote in a statement on IG on Sunday (June 18). “I’m praying for best and remain confident that God will bring me through this.”
He continued, “I have spent the last 7 months rehabilitating my mind, body, and soul. Though I came to jail a good person, I will leave a great person. I’ve turned this jail cell into my work office. I will continue the legacy of the Umbrella from here or anywhere else, I won’t let anything stop me from being a positive light and a help to those in need.”
In a separate post, Tory shouted out Gold specifically and said the future of his One Umbrella collective was in his hands.
“Two and a half years ago my brother Yoko and I orchestrated this record for his project, we never thought nothing of it. It collected dust in a hard drive. Guess God had a different plan for it.”
He continued, “Never thought I’d say this but I wanna thank the Umbrellas for LEAKING this record. Yoko it’s your time. Hold the Umbrella down while I’m gone.”
“Hurt Me’s” official drop comes after the track had previously leaked online. Kyle Jenner was also seen on TikTok on Friday (June 16) bumping the song in her car.
The new track comes as Tory’s sentencing date for shooting Megan Thee Stallionwas once again pushed back last week, with the presiding Judge Herriford granting a continuance for the Canadian star’s attorneys.
Lanez was supposed to finally be sentenced on Tuesday (June 13), but the sentencing was delayed at the last minute at the request of the rapper’s legal counsel, who now have until August 1 to submit a sentencing recommendation ahead of a new sentencing date of August 7, according to reporter Meghann Cuniff.
This marks the third time Lanez’ sentencing date has been delayed. It was initially set for January 2, roughly a month after he was found guilty of shooting Megan in the feet during a drunken dispute in the Hollywood Hills in July 2020. However, a judge delayed the sentencing until February 28 due to Lanez changing legal counsel.
When February 28 rolled around, the date was pushed back even further, as the Canadian rapper filed a motion for a new trial, which was ultimately denied.
